yeah they invented the title Data Scientist because they didn't want to be Statistical Analysts or Database Analysts anymore. It's manipulating data with a new title that fools nutters into calling them just "scientists". I work with sales reps that sell software to Data Science folks all the time and none of them are a scientist anymore than computer science is a scientist.
the woman in question didn't even have a Data Scientist title … she's an Information Systems Manager which resides in an IT organization. Dumbcunts like Mob get erect when you call someone a Scientist which is exactly why NPR used that headline as "Florida dismisses IT Manager" just doesn't have the same ring.
It's all about the narrative they want to push to make the braindead fall in line. They didn't fire a Covid Scientist they fired an IT Manager
I run the data science department at a large retailer. Have several DS working for me. It is a real field that's more than IT.
Computer Science/IT + Math = Machine Learning
Computer Science/IT + Domain Knowledge = Software Development
Math + Domain Knowledge = Traditional Research
All 3 together = Data Science
To me the scientist part is applicable because you are doing a lot of experimentation. It's more than data piping and data engineering and writing code, it's part art and a lot of experience.
Anyway, carry on, I do agree they hyped the title. Funny they even dropped the 'data' part and just went with "scientist" a few times.
PS which software? Alteryx?
